At the northern end of the Outer Banks on what's known as the Currituck Outer Banks, Corolla is an upscale
resort area that caters to vacationers with luxurious cottages, numerous shopping, dining and recreational
opportunities, and of course, great beaches.
The area's vacation homes are known for their modern amenities, Some of them have sleeping accommodations
for 20 or more and are popular places for several families to vacation together. The Sand Trap Beach House
is located in Ocean Sands South Section C. Section C is directly across from the Currituck Golf Club, and only
1/2 mile from Harris Teeter, and about 2 1/2 miles south of the TimBuck II shopping center, the Food Lion,
movie theater, restaurants and additional shopping. Ocean Sands South, including Sections A, B, and C is distinct
from adjacent Ocean Sands, because it was developed earlier on large lots of 1/2 acre or more. Because of the
huge lot sizes, houses are farther apart and more private, the beaches less crowded, and the views more
expansive.
Corolla (pronounced cor-AH-la) gets its name from the term for the inner petals of a flower. Attractions in
Corolla include the 1895 red-brick Currituck Beach Lighthouse, which is open for climbing the interior stairs to
the balcony at the top. Just south of the lighthouse is the Whalehead Club, a copper-roofed, canary yellow
mansion that was built by a wealthy industrialist as a hunting and fishing retreat. It has been restored to its
former 1922 hunt-club glory, and is open for touring. Old Corolla Village, north of the lighthouse, reveals the
history of this once-isolated community with dusty unpaved roads, a one-room schoolhouse, restored homes and
the charming Corolla Chapel. North of Corolla is a four-wheel-drive area, where wild horses roam. Several
companies rent ATVs for touring this area and viewing the horses.
